From the Nov 2009 issue of CNN Money, they came up with a list of the 50 best jobs in US and pointed out why they should be in the list, along with certain drawbacks that come with such a great profession.
Statistics show a large number of Americans are staying at home and are unemployed, of which, the figures for 2010 are quite remarkable. Perhaps you may want to explore those considered great jobs, and without you realizing it, may be qualified for one. Much of the list of the considered best jobs has not changed a lot in the first half of 2010.
Let us have a look at the 10 jobs that topped the list:
1. Systems Engineer
Top performers can easily hit six figures for this type of job with lots of opportunity for advancement. However, Long hours are common; project deadlines can be fierce.
Pre-reqs: An undergrad engineering degree; some jobs might also require certification as a certified systems engineering professional (CSEP).
2. Physician Assistant
Working under the supervision of a doctor, PAs do all tasks involved in routine medical care, such as diagnosing illnesses and assisting in surgery. In certain states, they can even write prescriptions.
Pre-reqs: A master’s degree; 100 hours of training every two years; recertification every six.
3. College Professor
If qualified, you can find lots of available positions at community colleges and professional programs, where you can enter the professoriate as an adjunct faculty member or non-tenure track instructor without a doctorate degree.
Pre-reqs: For a tenure track position, you’ll need a Ph.D. But all colleges want at least a master’s degree and prefer plenty of teaching experience.
4. Nurse Practitioner
In addition to performing routine caretaking tasks, nurse practitioners have the advanced medical training to diagnose and treat a wide range of ailments. They can also prescribe medication without consulting an MD.
Pre-reqs: Must first complete training to get license as a registered nurse; master’s degree, plus certification. A doctor of nursing practice degree is increasingly in demand, which requires about three additional years of study.
5. Information Technology Project Manager
IT Project Managers take charge of huge tech projects like software upgrades, etc. Not only the job involves lot of opportunities, the implementation of newer technologies keeps the job challenging.
Pre-reqs: Five to seven years of technology and computer-related experience. A project management professional certification, along with an MBA, will enhance career prospects.
6. Certified Public Accountant
Being a CPA means constantly having to work with numbers, whether it’s for financial analysis or tax preparation. There is plenty of jobs in this field, yet one drawback is the unforgiving deadlines and the mid-February and April 15 time of the year, known the busiest for accountants, where work can eventually take over personal lives.
Pre-reqs: A certification exam and, typically, 150 hours of business and accounting classes and work experience.
7. Physical Therapist
They restore strength, flexibility, and range of motion to people who have been sidelined by injury, illness, or disease.
Pre-reqs: A master’s degree, plus certification and state licensing. Many employers prefer a doctor of physical therapy degree.
8. Computer/Network Security Consultant
This job involves protecting computer systems and networks against hackers, spyware, and viruses. As no company or government agency can afford to have a serious breach in the security of its computer system, they are much in demand.
Pre-reqs: Mostly major geekdom, since the skills can be self-taught. Still, a computer science degree comes in handy. An information systems security professional certification (CISSP) is increasingly favored. Experience is key for better-paying positions: Most companies won’t hire a consultant with less than five years of experience.
9. Intelligence Analyst
These are the people who gather and analyze data related to international policy and military strategy, most often for the government or defense contractors. Obviously, the government hires you. So, imagine the benefits.
Pre-reqs: Security clearance, of course. Foreign languages and often military experience are a huge plus.
10. Sales Director
They are the people responsible for setting and meeting sales goals, generate new accounts, and mentor and train new recruits
Pre-reqs: 10 years of sales experience and a year or two in management. A proven track record beats an advanced degree.
From the same list, among those considered as great jobs are Software developers, Pharmacists, Occupational Therapist, Software Product Manager, IT Business Analyst, Human Resource Manager, Senior Financial Analyst, Marketing Manager, Technical Writer, Telecommunications Network Engineer, Hotel Manager, Securities Trader, Education/Training Consultant, Quality Control Engineer, Manufacturing Engineer, Computer Software Program Manager, Commercial Property Manager, Pharmaceutical Sales Representative, Quality Assurance Manager and Finance research Analyst.
Software developer is actually number 12 in the list. These geniuses write and debug software for use in computer applications, websites, and other data processing systems. With technology moving no other way but forward, looks like they will never be unemployed. Pharmacists, on the other hand, are important forces in the medical world as they dispense medications following prescriptions issued by doctors, dentists, or other authorized medical practitioners. In addition, they educate patients on medication use, storage and side effects, as well as help patients to prevent dangerous or harmful drug interactions. They rank 13 in the list.
Being 20th in the list isn’t that bad at all. Human Resource managers oversee all human resources initiatives (e.g. recruitment, compensation, benefits, training, and employee relations) of an organization. Technical writers write technical materials, such as equipment manuals, online help documentation, operating directions and maintenance instructions. While Computer Software Program Managers identify requirements, write specifications, work with development teams from design through testing and delivery, and manage project schedules for software applications, websites, and services. Listed 42nd, Commercial Property Managers manage commercial properties, such as retail and office spaces, by arranging maintenance, executing leases, collecting rent, and providing other services on behalf of property owners.
But really, any job could be great in its own sense. You don’t need a degree to be a Funeral Service manager, Storage and Distribution Supervisor, Call Center Agent, a Virtual Assistant or a Freelance Writer. I heard a lot of people are making good money from being a Video Game Tester. It sounds fun but it could also be a lot of work since the job falls in quality assurance. With recession still very much felt, and still uncertain as to which direction it will be heading, any job will be a great as long as it will help pay the bills. Surely, there could be a couple of jobs that would suit your talent.
