It’s summer time once again – time for that annual road trip! Yes, summer is usually synonymous with road trip. What better time to go on a road adventure than summer when the sun is at its best and you have all the time in the world. Whether you’re with your family or friends, being on the road going to places you’ve never been to, exploring new sights and faces, and discovering the world in a whole new light can be the most wonderful, liberating feeling ever.

But being on the road for a long period of time also entails a lot of challenges, a lot of costs – mainly gas. High gas prices can eat up a lot, if not most, of your travel budget especially if you’re not careful with it. But this doesn’t mean that you’ll cancel your annual road trip altogether. Nothing in the world can stop you from making that adventure! All it takes is careful planning and proper budgeting and you’re on your way to the best summer of your life!

Here are a few tips to help you save on your road trip but still enjoy it.

1. Make an Itinerary. Much of the fun of a road trip is the spontaneity, not knowing or planning where to go next. But this can also be its own biggest setback, causing you to overspend. To stay within your budget but still enjoy the adventure of a road trip, try to make an itinerary. It doesn’t have to be a strict itinerary but more of a guide to keep you in check. This will help you enjoy your vacation more while saving precious dollars along the way.

2. Book in advance. If you’re already set on where you’re going, book your hotels in advance. This will save you money and especially the hassle of having to look for a place to stay when you arrive at your destination. Book online for a faster transaction.

3. Look for discounts. In your hotels and destinations, always look and ask for discounts. Especially in the summer, hotels and tourist attractions usually offer amazing discounts that will save you a lot of money. You might even save enough money to afford you another destination! Research online or call your planned destinations to get the best discounts available.

4. Stay with Friends or Relatives. If your road trip takes you to places where you have friends and/ or relatives, try asking them if you can spend the night or two in their homes. This will save you plenty of hotel money, but most of all, give you a chance to bond with your long-missed loved ones.

5. Tune up your car. Have your car tuned up before your planned road trip. Have all the fluids checked, change the oil and air filter, and make sure that your tires are properly inflated. This will increase your miles per gallon significantly, saving you enough money to buy souvenirs or even give you an extra day on the road. Moreover, tuning up your car ahead will not only help your budget, it can save you from any untoward accident!

Taking on a road trip is one of the best ways to spend the summer. Seeing new sights and faces with your family or friends is one the most memorable and enjoyable times you’ll ever have. Plan ahead of time and stick to your budget and you’ll have the greatest adventures of your life!
